With this post, we thought we’d spotlight three Kaslo businesses that we love.
As you know, Kaslo Sourdough has been operating out of our beautiful hometown, Kaslo BC for almost thirty years. While it isn’t always easy running a business in such a remote area, we feel getting to live and work in such a stunning place far outweighs the challenges! We love being local to the Kootenays, and earlier this year we shared a bit about some of the ways we keep our dollars in the community.
Business one: Honey Candles
Honey Candles is a beeswax candle business that is located just a few kilometers north of Kaslo. It has been family owned and operated for over 20 years. The current owners are one of the founding owners’ children, Alecia, and her husband Stephan, who purchased the company from Alecia’s parents in 2016. They work alongside a small staff of skilled employees.
Running a sustainable and environmentally conscious company is very important at Honey Candles. They source their beeswax from apiaries (bee homes) in Western Canada, and most of the packaging used is made in British Columbia using recycled materials.
Quality is also of the utmost importance: every candle is handmade, and hand packaged using the finest 100% pure Canadian beeswax, no mixing or cutting with other waxes. Not to mention they also have one of the widest varieties of beeswax candles of any company in North America – from birthday candles to standard tapers, to gorgeous seasonal pinecones and trees. We usually have a few of these candles on our countertops, especially during the Christmas season.
Business Two: Back Dirt Road
Back Dirt Road produces handmade, natural luxury soap and body products. It's a business that operates out of owner Marianne’s backyard shop in downtown Kaslo. We’ve loved seeing her expand her product list over the last few years.
What started first as soap bars now includes an impressive line of body lotions, toners, bath bombs, hair conditioning bars and more. She creates all her products with fresh ingredients, quality oils, essential oils or fragrance oils and a variety of natural mineral colourants such as chlorophyll, herbs, micas and more.
Business Three: Busy Bree’s Wax Wraps
Busy Bree is a passionate Kaslo entrepreneur who strives to live sustainably and create products that do not harm the planet. In 2018 she created her first beeswax wrap: a sustainable, reusable alternative to plastic wrap.
These wraps are handmade from upcycled materials that keep fabric out of the landfill. Did we mention the cute fabric prints as well? Four different sizes are available, including a custom size if you don’t see the one you want.
In 2019, Bree started bringing them to local farmers markets and they were an instant success! She now carries her wraps at several retailers and has an online shop. The website also has great ideas for how to use the wraps (we've picked up a few ideas from there!).
Supporting Kaslo Local
We love these local businesses and love being able to support these entrepreneurial locals. It feels good to support these talented business owners who make fabulous and practical products that add to our homes. If you need any inspiration, we think any of these would make great gifts and stocking stuffers.
